Northumberland National Park Authority has purposes laid out in law. These relate to conserving and enhancing the special qualities of the area, and promoting opportunities to enjoy it.

The authority sees delivery on these purposes as being inter-linked with the economy. Today, in describing our purpose of promoting opportunities for understanding and enjoyment, we add social inclusion and the interdependence of town and country. In promoting conservation, we seek to emphasise that, as living landscapes, there is a mutual dependence of environment, community and economy; the essential principles of sustainable development.

We can also see how better to achieve new life and greater security for Park communities if we see their knowledge, culture and traditions are part of a heritage and as the social capital for rural development. We all need to adopt new ways of working if our goal of sustainable development is to be achieved. Anglo-Saxon kings of Northumbria maintained a grand palace and much earlier, Neolithic people had a temple here, and Bronze Age communities buried their dead in the shadow of Yeavering Bell.

To the west lies Kielder Water , the largest forest in England, the largest reservoir in North West Europe and is a haven for red squirrels, deer and rare birds, including many species of birds of prey. It is ideal for activities such as walking, cycling, horse riding, fishing, boating and watersports and you can enjoy a trip on a ferry cruiser. The mighty wall ran across the whole width of Britain, from Wallsend Newcastle-upon-Tyne in the east to Bowness-on-Solway in the west.

Tapestry Cottage is a delightful stone holiday home settled in the pretty village of Harbottle.

Children will love the enchanting garden which has lots of flowers and shrubs, and they will enjoy watching the birds gather around the feeder. The outdoor seating area with stove offers the perfect place to sit of an evening, and the inside is absolutely charming too. Sleeps six, three dogs welcome. Catcleugh Farmhouse is a stylish and rustic former farmhouse located in Northumberland Dark Sky Park, which means starry nights and an amazing atmosphere!

This impressive house, sleeping ten, offers plenty of space for a group gathering and acts as the perfect base to explore from. It also welcomes three dogs! Cragside View is set on the edge of the National Park in Rothbury, making it a good location for exploring the coast too!
