Son of Idely Barrichello and Rubens Barrichello Senior, he felt the acceleration thrill for the first time at 6 when his grandfather on the mother side gave him a kart. His first experience in a car championship was in Ford Formula, in In his first challenge, the racer showed his business card by finishing the race in the first position. At the end of the season he was third in the championship. A new challenge comes up in with the races remarkably conducted: he was invited to be part of West Surrey Racing team in the British Formula Three.

Once again, he surprised everyone and was the champion. The youngest pilot to secure the title of the category, beaten only by Nelsinho, in , a big opponent, who was the champion of the second season and Rubens of the first. After two triumphant seasons, the racer gave his last step before reaching his main goal. The year was tough. He was an F1 vice-champion two times, in and , and scored 11 F1 victories and 68 podiums, but his greatest achievement is a record which still stands with entries and starts in the Formula 1 World Championship.

He has won the title that year, winning 4 out of 16 races and having another 4 podium finishes. Barrichello became a youngest ever champion of the series and his record was beaten by his compatriot Nelson Piquet Jr in After he has won two titles in two years, Barrichello was invited to take a part in European Formula Championship.

Return to Italy was good for the Brazilian who felt more comfortable at the Apennines. He became a driver of Il Barone Rampante team and had a very good season in which he finished third overall and caught the eye of big guns from the top racing series.

In January of , Barrichello awaited his big day. He was called by Jordan F1 team to make tests at Silverstone. The things went smoothly and the Brazilian quickly made a deal with Jordan team, despite having other offers, too.
