How many altoids can you eat

People with GERD may find that peppermint oil's muscle-relaxing abilities make their symptoms worse. The sphincter between the stomach and the esophagus may become too loosened after the oil is ingested. This action can make symptoms or GERD or hiatal hernia worse, especially when it comes to heartburn and reflux plain. Because peppermint oil has traditionally been used for bringing about menstruation in women with irregular periods, it is possible that the oil can cause miscarriage.

In addition, young children should not have peppermint candy at all or should be given it only in very small amounts, AAFP notes. Along with the obvious choking hazard to toddlers, even a small amount of peppermint oil can cause internal spasms that interfere with swallowing or breathing.

AAFP notes that these potential risks don't mean that occasional peppermint candy or mint tea is forbidden to breastfeeding or pregnant women or for younger children. However, more than an occasional, small amount could pose a danger.

Striped peppermint candy typically gets its characteristic colors from artificial dyes such as Red 40, according to the USDA. These dyes have been identified as possible contributors to health problems in children, warns the Center for Science in the Public Interest. Hyperactivity is a particular concern. If you have kids, consider going with a non-dyed mint candy in order to get that holiday taste, along with potential peppermint benefits, without the risks that come with artificial dyes.

The association recommends that people aim to take in no more than 50 grams of sugar each day. So where does peppermint candy fit into those guidelines? The USDA estimates that three pieces of peppermint candy contain about 15 grams of sugar. Given that you're unlikely to avoid sugars in the rest of your day's food selections, those three pieces are already stretching the limits. If you truly have a peppermint candy addiction or, at least, a hardcore habit you're unlikely to stop at three pieces.

Seizures are possible when this toxicity occurs, and in rare cases, it can even be fatal. Obviously, peppermint candy is meant to be taken internally. A man died from an enormous caffeine overdose after snacking on high-energy mints — each of which is as powerful as a can of Red Bull.

Each mint contains 80mg of caffeine, equivalent to a can of Red Bull, but are sold alongside normal mints. Introduced in , Altoids mints were originally marketed to relieve stomach discomfort. The mints contain real peppermint which has been proven to be very helpful in relieving stomach pain. Eventually I swallow the last of it. Time passed: 29 minutes.

Thanks for dropping by my blog. By M , at AM, July 30, Man, that's, er, amazing. I linked to you with an article on my blog , and salute your crazed wacked-out-atude. Hope you don't mind my snarfing your mouth picture--that's just nasty! By Anonymous , at PM, July 30, I really appreciate this kind of post, specially the Altoids issue, is something new and easy to follow.

The combination of informative and quality content is definitely a plus. I think we can't ignore the realistic fact. I ate a whole tin of altoids in one go. I took a handful, chewed it up, then swallowed, then repeated until the tin was empty. It was super minty but didn't burn too badly, though I could feel the tingle all the way through my sinuses.

Less than a minute after I finished I felt this weird feeling and huge flush of mucous cleared out of my sinus passage and I'm not underestimating when I say it could fill up that tin of altoids.

It was a lot. I hadn't even realized I was stuffed up until my bodily voided everything in my sinuses. It was a really weird feeling. I tried it again a few years later but it just felt minty and tingly but no mucous flush. By Anonymous , at PM, December 18, By Anonymous , at PM, April 24, An article by Art of Manliness showed creative, clever, unexpected ways to reuse the metal tins, including using them for sewing kits and mini flashlights.

It makes sense. In , a marketing director for Altoids' manufacturer explained, "Altoids tins were originally used for shortwave radios. Because the mints are kept securely in the tin, people can also feel more comfortable sharing them. Back in , Amoco attorney Bob Stout explained, "[With] a roll of mints, [people] feel kind of funny peeling off the paper and they don't know where it's been.

You can keep them in the box and people feel very comfortable taking one" via CNN Money. While people might associate Altoids with the classic red box of peppermint lozenges, there are actually multiple flavors, such as wintergreen, spearmint, and cinnamon.

As a brand, they also make sugar-free Altoids Smalls, made with sorbitol and sucralose instead of sugar via Amazon. Some other Altoids products did not do as well as the classic mints.

In the early s, the company produced Altoids Sours, Altoids Gum, and Altoids Breath Strips, none of which proved popular enough to last. The Candy Encyclopedia by Fandom reports the gum was discontinued somewhere around The claim appears to be corroborated by Amazon reviews , with commenters lamenting in and later about the discontinuation of the gum. Kiddle reports that the breath strips stopped production in , and product listings on Amazon note they have been discontinued.

Altoids Sours were pulled in "due to low national demand," according to a Wrigley statement cited by Bustle. However, the sours have a cult following.
